BOOK is OUT!

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 27, 2008, 3:17 AM

Hey everybody!

I had some cool news today from my publisher (and a lot of emails from people) - My book has been released a month early! Anybody who has pre-ordered the book (certainly in the UK) should be receiving it today or tomorrow. I am very excited that it is finally on the shelves and seeing in a local bookstore was really quite something. Anyway, I hope that all of you that have ordered the book do enjoy it and it helps you understand more about how I work and some more about Digital painting in general.

Other things worth mentioning are Imagine FX magazine are reviewing the book in the next issue, so anybody uncertain about it can see what they think (I have no idea myself at the minute!) - Advanced Photoshop have an interview with me for the next issue and are also reviewing the book the following month too. There are some other press things I am doing too, but I'll tell you about them soon. :)

I hope you are all doing well out there - thank you for all your message and I am sorry if I do not get back to you - things are rather frantic at times for me recently!

Best,
G x :)

Hello!

Not an enormous amount o talk about - although I have been looking at the proofs for "Bold Visions" and it has come out fab! - I'm quite eager to get my hands on it myself - there is something about having work in print that makes it seem somehow more "real" - can't put my finger on it really, but I've always felt like that. Anyway the book is going into production in the next few weeks so that is pretty dam exciting!

I hope you are all well out there - apologies if I fail to get back to any messages you send. :)

Hey everybody - not a lot to talk about at the minute, aside from my book is now available to pre-order! :) It is not released until July 15th next year, but it will contain a lot of the info that many of you contact me about on here and via email. Full image tutorials, tips and technique breakdowns, all sorts! Anyway, the ISBN number is:

ISBN-13: 978-1600610202

and a direct link on Amazon (US) is here:

BOLD VISIONS

I'm really busy at the minute with a lot of other things so not much chance for personal art - I'll try and get back to it ASAP! :)

best,
G x

Speedpainting (and other stuff)

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 27, 2007, 7:16 AM
  • Mood: Optimism
Hello,

I thought I would write a quick message to everybody about my paintings, specifically Speed Paintings, I get asked many questions about them and I thought the best way to attend to this is give you some idea about how I classify my work – whether it is a quick sketch thru to a full illustration.

Anyway, I would class a “Sketch” as something I create in under 15-20 minutes, I do not publish sketches, mostly as they are iterative and they also tend to be difficult to read as they are ideation phase images. Also, I tend to do most my sketching in my AD role, which I cannot show anyway.

A “SPEED PAINTING” is something I would complete, for the most part, within 120 minutes; the timescale is important as I try to stop if I get to this point (or take the image further – which is therefore no longer a SP). When creating an SP, I might on the odd occasion use a little part of a photo or something else as a starting point to work out from (this would be less than 20% of the final image real estate). This can be quite helpful (a bit like drawing lines all over a clean canvas) in loosening me up quickly if I do not have anything specific in mind, important when time is of the essence. With a speed painting, I normally paint something I really want – or at least something I have a strong in my head about, for the same time based reasons, I can’t be messing about thinking when I should be painting!

A “Concept” would come in at anywhere between 3-12 hours work normally. There has been a lot more thought into the composition of a concept piece – maybe even a couple of sketches before it is started. However, I would not normally finalise all the details in a concept, rather try to impress the details upon the viewer with roughish brush strokes. Concept work makes up much of my paint time at work – although I only get about 25% of my time at work to paint. My concept images are normally used as “Key pieces” to underline the final look and feel for an area or idea. Concept images are normally about 3-4k largest dimension. “The Room, Fire Caves” etc come in this category.

A “Full Illustration” would be me working up an idea to the best of my ability and, assuming I do not tire of the image during creation (which I do a lot) the details are much more formed and the resolution is much higher (for print use for instance). 6-7k largest dimension would be the resolution I work at. “Nimbus, Prometheus, Stormbringer” all come into this category. I only really tend to do this for my VisionAfar site work, so not that often at the minute.

I hope this helps people understand what I am talking about when I speak of the type of image something is.

Best,
G x

"222 222"

Morning world :)

I like numbers when they line up - so seeing "222222" page views today was kind of cool for me to find - I thought I would update my journal. You may be interested to know I been asked to write an illustration book, so I am not taking on any commissions currently (I am very busy!)

Other than that I am hoping to get more time to actually do some more art for me - fingers crossed I can find more time for this now I am back in a more creative role. :)

As ever, please forgive me if I take a while to reply to mails or notes - I'm quite forgetful!
